Couples Therapy

16 Sessions

Everyone knows–if your relationship isn't working, you're not working. Let's use science to help you both get through challenging times.

Therapy Lab's 16-session Couples Therapy plan uses Integrative Behavior Couple Therapy (IBCT) to focus on communication and problem-solving skills that help couples improve their relationship.

What is IBCT?

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) is a widely recognized and evidence-based approach developed by Dr. Andrew Christensen of UCLA and Dr. Neil S. Jacobson of the University of Washington. As described by the American Psychological Association, IBCT "integrates the twin goals of acceptance and change as positive outcomes for couples in therapy."

Why you might choose this plan
  • Behavior patterns (such as criticizing, poor listening, or acting out) that make it difficult to communicate effectively
  • Stubbornness and difficulty accepting your individual differences
  • Problems with intimacy and dissatisfaction with your sex life
  • Rehashing the same issues with your partner without resolution
  • Lack of communication with, or empathy for, your partner
  • Conflict or feeling isolated within your relationship
  • Irritation or frustrations in your relationship that you'd like to work out before they get bigger
What to expect

With TL’s Couples Therapy / IBCT plan, you’ll learn new behaviors and habits to support more awareness and communication and problem-solving skills that will help you build resilience and relationship satisfaction with your partner.

Couples will develop a better understanding of each other’s thoughts, feelings and needs which will feed more intimacy.

As you progress, you may notice that you are more accepting and grateful for your partner and the unique contours of your relationship. And you may feel better about yourself as an individual–an added benefit that is frequently observed when couples start therapy together.

Many people who try couples therapy notice that their own personal mental health, and even physical health, are markedly improved–this has been supported by research.

In-person, telehealth or both

Your Therapy Lab therapist can deliver the Couples Therapy plan through in-person visits, by telehealth or through a combination of the two.

How long does therapy take?

You will typically complete the 16-session plan over four months. Each session lasts 45 to 50 minutes.
